At approximately 3:00 PM on April 27, 2012, Highway 16 was closed about 2 kilometres East of Topley, BC, due to a sinkhole under the roadbed. The sinkhole appears to extend under the entire road base. The highway has been closed and a detour has been constructed for light vehicles while a longer-term solution is being put into place.

The detour should be completely reinforced to carry light traffic, like cars and pickups, this afternoon.

Traffic has been piloted through the detour since this morning.

Work has already begun on exposing the sinkhole in order to place a temporary bridge over the hole for larger and commercial traffic to be able to travel through the affected area again.
